Description
This is Jack Layton, late leader of the New Democratic Party of Canada and, from May until July, leader of the official opposition in Parliament.
Jack was a much-beloved politician because he was a very nice, amiable, and hard-working man who was especially concerned about those in society that are the most vulnerable.
He died on Monday, August 22, 2011, of cancer. I made this watercolour at Fan Expo in Toronto on the following Thursday. People requested copies of it, so I sold them with all money going to Prostate Cancer Canada. The cancer he eventually died of was not disclosed, but he originally had Prostate Cancer.
People were touched and gave generously and even shared stories of when they met Jack and how kind and friendly he was and eager to hear about them.
He left a very touching letter, released to the media on the day he died, where he wrote:
"My friends, love is better than anger. Hope is better than fear. Optimism is better than despair. So let us be loving, hopeful and optimistic. And we'll change the world."
With that in mind, I made this rather happy picture of Jack riding an equally happy pony and used it to raise money to help others. I think it is a good start to changing the world.
